When we were approached by upcoming NASCAR Racing hopeful, Gus Dean’s race team to produce his marketing materials CODA5 jumped across the hood and into the driver’s seat! Well OK, not really, but we had a great time building his web site, hero cards and posters. Now it’s 2010 he’s at the top of his Allison Racing division and about a foot taller than last time we did a photo shoot with him. Look for the new wwwGusDean.com racing site coming soon!

What in the world is SEO and how does it make me money?

Many website design companies out there are using the buzz word (and acronym) “Complete SEO”. So what is and and why do you want it?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is comprised of a number of elements in the programming and content of your website which make it attractive to search engines. Like most realities in the world, SEO is only as good as what you put into it. At coda5 we always try to advise our clients to really consider the target market they are trying to capture.

“You have to think like a googler.”, says Tyrus Christiana, owner coda5. “Imagine you are searching for your own product or service and then forget that you know most of the technical specifics. Type that into Google and see what comes up.”

You can learn alot about what kind of SEO you should be doing on your website by what is working for your competition. Look at their page title and descriptive text on the page. Mouse over the images to see what alternate text shows up. If you know how, look at the source code of the page and see what meta tags they are using in their header. Once you’ve done that analysis, cross reference it with what you were searching for to begin with. Consider ways that your SEO could be a better target for the actual search.

There is alot more to Search Engine Optimization including some very technical tools, but the next biggest influence you can have on a search engine is referrals. Hyperlinks to your site from other sites create a certain street credit, if you will, with search engines. The more links you have to your site on other sites the better.

To sum up this short article, a “Complete SEO” is something that indicates perfection and realistically unachievable, however a “Robust” and well thought out SEO is an absolute must for your site these days. More eyes on your product or service means more money in your bank account. That’s something we can all use right about now.
